Tesla Pre-PO Engineering Review Requirements
Introduction
Tesla has various requirements that must be met before accepting a PO and providing a delivery date for the Megapack 2XL. The timeline for the engineering review process is dependent on the amount of updates required to the SLD as well as response times from the customer. By following this guide, the engineering review time frame will be shortened as much as possible by having all necessary components and callouts listed in the preliminary drawings. The requirements are laid out in this article in four separate forms and will go into more detail in each section:
- Site Layout Clearance Requirements
- Generic Single Line with Requirements
- Site Configuration Checklist - link to download excel spreadsheet at bottom of page
- Tesla Design Review Checklist - document linked at bottom of page
1.0 Site Layout Clearance Requirements
These clearances are required (as applicable) to be shown in the SLD prior to PO acceptance from Tesla.

Figure 3: Equipment Clearance Requirements
Callout | Type of Clearance | Minimum | Maximum | Notes |
1 |
Back-to-Back |
460 mm (18 in) recommended for access purposes. 230 mm (9 in) with prior Tesla review. |
None | Measured from the back faces of the Megapacks. See also Additional Anchoring Considerations on page 81. |
2 |
Front |
2440 mm (96 in) | None | Measured from the face of the door(s). Tesla-required clearance for maintenance access. NOTE: Removable bollards may be installed within this area with prior Tesla approval. No permanent obstructions are allowed. |
3 | Foundation Overhang | 100 mm (4 in) | 305 mm (12 in) | Varies depending on anchor and site design but must fall within this range. See Equipment Bearing Areas and Anchoring on page 80 for more information. |
4 | Drive Aisle | 1960 mm (77 in) | None | Measured from foundation. Tesla-required clearance for maintenance access. |
5 | Vertical | 2440 mm (96 in) | None | Must extend across the Battery Service Zone, as some service equipment extends beyond the roof of the enclosure. Megapack may only be installed by a crane, thus actual clearance during installation will be greater. |
6 | Side-to-Side | 150 mm (6 in) | None | Measured from the side faces of each Megapack. |
7 | Service Side | 915 mm (36 in) | None | Measured from the face of each side of the Megapack, except where side-by-side with another Megapack. |
8 | Battery Service Zone | -- | -- |
The Battery Service Zone, shown shaded above, consists of the Front (2), Vertical (5), and Service side (7) clearances. |

2.0 Generic Single Line with Requirements
Depending on the project, please include all details shown on the Single Line that are applicable to your project. This will ensure the fastest engineering review timeline possible - photo shown below is linked at the bottom of the page.
Note: If the Megapack 2XL and PV land on the same panel board, a line reactor will be required and called out in the SLD to prevent resonance in the system.
3.0 Site Configuration Checklist
There is a link to this excel spreadsheet at the bottom of this article. Please download and complete as best as possible with your project information.
4.0 Tesla Design Review Checklist
This checklist (linked at bottom of page) is an overview of Tesla's requirements when designing a new system. Please familiarize yourself with this checklist.
